Founded in 1983 by Mr. Balan Palanisamy, Suraya Filem Production & Distribution is one of Malaysia’s longest-established film companies, with a sustained presence across Southeast Asia. Over more than four decades, the company has developed into a fully integrated production and distribution organisation, recognised for its consistency, market expertise, and ability to manage a broad range of content across multiple platforms and territories. Headquartered in Kuala Lumpur, Suraya Filem is built on long-standing relationships and a deep understanding of regional markets, enabling it to operate effectively within both local and international film ecosystems.
Suraya Filem’s core business spans theatrical, digital, television, and home entertainment distribution, ensuring content reaches audiences through cinemas, free-to-air and pay-TV broadcasters, VOD platforms, and physical media. The company distributes a diverse portfolio of local and international titles, including English-language films as well as Bollywood, South Indian, Indonesian, Thai, and wider ASEAN content. Its distribution network covers Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei, India, Thailand, the Philippines, Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam, reflecting its role as a regional connector between filmmakers, exhibitors, and audiences.
In addition to distribution, Suraya Filem is actively involved in film production, co-production, and co-financing. The company works closely with creative partners from development through to release, providing both financial support and practical guidance. This collaborative approach allows Suraya Filem to share resources and commercial responsibility while supporting producers across key stages, including planning, casting, post-production, marketing, and distribution.
People and partnerships remain central to Suraya Filem’s operations. Marketing and promotional strategies are developed in close collaboration with stakeholders and tailored to each project, covering publicity planning, digital and social media campaigns, event management, and audience engagement initiatives. The company also manages film sales, licensing, and rights administration, supporting international releases, adaptations, and long-term value creation.
